Gig of the Week: 1 August — 7 August 2012

Where: Mao Livehouse
When: Fri 3 Aug, 21:00
How Much: 100RMB
Who: The Gar, Hedgehog, Casino Demon (More Info)
Why: That’s one hell of a lineup. The Gar are known for not playing shows, like, ever, so it’s always going to be my recommendation to see them whenever they make the commitment to get on stage. Hedgehog has been one of the hardest-working bands these last couple of years and I can’t wait to see what they’ve been up to in the last few months. And Casino Demon is a band I saw once, way back, at Mao for their New Year’s gig, so it will be especially interesting to see where they are these days. But one warning: this is going to be a packed-out show. Get there early, grab your beers, and stake out your real estate, because otherwise you’ll be crammed by the door unable to move.

There are a few noteworthy gigs going on this weekend. First up is also on Friday night unfortunately, but it really is as billed: three great bands at one tiny venue. The Amazing Insurance Salesmen, Perpetual Motion Machine and Grinding Ear take the minuscule stage at Old What Bar, Fri @ 9:30PM, 40RMB. Then on Saturday, there are two amazing options. Pangbianr Night is back at Old What Bar, this time presenting French duo One Lick Less alongside local group Chui Wan, Sat @ 9:30PM, 40RMB. And over at Temple, the King Size China shows kick off with Guangzhou group Dawah@Mui next to local post-rock act Sparrow, Sat @ 9:30PM, Free.
