Gig of the Week: 4 July — 10 July 2012
Where: Temple
When: Sat 7 July, 22:00
How Much: Suggested donation of 50RMB
Who: Mohanik, Banana Monkey, Scary Magic, DJ BO (More Info)
Why: If you’ll think back to earlier this year, the name Mohanik will be familiar — they played the last night ever at D-22. And they rocked it. They drank nearly a whole bottle of some sort of Mongolian moonshine and banged out an amazing rock set. They’ll make the floor shake at Temple, no doubt about it. As for the other two bands, I don’t know them from Adam since they’re from Shanghai, but that’s almost reason enough. It’s great to get out and see some new bands, and what’s the worst that could happen? You fall in love with them and have to travel to Shanghai just to see them? … Okay, well that sucks. But at least you saw some great bands. Make a date for this one, it’ll be awesome.
It’s a busy weekend, like I said, so here’s what we’ve got: on Friday, there are four shows worth going to, of completely different styles. Mamer + IZ continue their takeover of Beijing’s hearts at Zajia Lab, 8:30PM, 60MRB; Omnipotent Youth Society take the stage with Taiwanese pop group Sugar Plum Ferry at Yugong Yishan, 9PM, 150RMB; Residence A and new group Dirty Little Secret rock the hutongs at Hot Cat Club, 9:30RMB, Free!; and finally, the last show of the current lineup of DH & Chinese Hellcats is going down at 2 Kolegas, 10PM, 80/60RMB. And if you’re not into amazing Mongolian rock, there’s other stuff on Saturday, too. All the local metal acts are out at the Beibang 3rd Anniversary at Mao Live, 8:30PM, 150/100RMB, or if you’re looking for a more low-key show, catch rock acts Dwaas and The Incisors at Hot Cat Club, 9:30PM, Free. Finally, Sunday brings out the shoegazers with an afternoon of Chinese bands at XP, including The Sound and the Fury, Deer and Islet, 3PM, 50/40RMB.
