Gig of the Week: 30 November — 6 December 2011
Where: Yugong Yishan
When: Sat 3 Dec, 21:00
How Much: 50RMB; 30RMB pre-sale
Who: Boys Climbing Ropes, X is Y, Residence A (More Info)
Why: This time, I swear I’m not picking this gig because of Residence A. Boys Climbing Ropes is a legitimately awesome Shanghai band who were once what you might call an “expat band”, but now the two Canadians have teamed up with Xiao Punk, and what a big difference that little punk has made. Unlike the other Shanghai groups in the recent invasion of Beijing, they’re not releasing a CD, but that doesn’t mean they’re not going to rock out. It’s going to be a sweet show, and not just because of them. X is Y is a great math rock group who I saw last winter, and of course, my darlings, my loves, Residence A, I cannot miss a show with them.
If you can’t make it to Yugong Yishan on Saturday, consider heading up to Wudaokou on Friday night, where BCR will be joined by Streets Kill Strange Animals and Me Too, 10PM, 50/40RMB. Otherwise, we’ve got Hedgehog at Yugong Yishan on Friday, 8:30PM, 80/60RMB; or indie pop-rock group DISH with their album launch at Mao Livehouse, also Friday, 8PM, 50/40RMB; for some post-BCR action on Saturday, take your YGYS ticket for a free show at Old What? Bar with Chui Wan, Alpine Decline and more (without the stub it’s 20RMB), 10:30PM; and for something different on Sunday, check out Japanese artist Megrim with infrequent performers Me:Mo at Yugong Yishan at 8PM, 100/70RMB.
And I’mma give you a heads up for next Wednesday: my good friends over at Split Works are turning five years old this month, and while most of the action is going on down in their local Shanghai, Beijing gets a taste of it with US artist Chad Valley, playing at Temple next Weds Dec 7 at 9PM. The show’s 50RMB and should be a ton of fun, so put that one in your diaries.
