Gig of the Week: 16 November — 22 November 2011

Where: D-22
When: Saturday 19 Nov, 22:00
How Much: 50RMB; 40RMB students
Who: Friend or Foe, Yan Tiao, Deadly Cradle Death, Perpetual Motion Machine (More Info)
Why: Shanghai bands have been coming up to Beijing more and more often lately, and I can’t pass up the opportunity to pimp them out. By all accounts, Friend or Foe is one of the most interesting acts coming out of the city. They’re prone to dressing up, they have alter-egos, and they should be a riotous good time. Plus, any chance to check out a band that won’t be here that often should be taken. As for the support acts, they’re always around but I’ve only seen Deadly Cradle Death before, and it’s not really my favourite music. But I’ve heard Yan Tiao is a decent show, and I’m hoping that Perpetual Motion Machine is the same. But Friend or Foe is the real draw card, and it should be a party.

Runners up this week include: TONIGHT at Yugong Yishan is US blues-folk group Two Gallants, and it just so happens that Residence A is opening the show, 8PM, 60RMB; if you haven’t caught up with Bigger Bang in a while, they’re now called Da Bang and will be at Yugong Yishan on Friday, 9PM, 60/50RMB; if hardcore punk is your thing, German group SS20 are back in Beijing, playing Sunday at Mao Livehouse, 8:30PM, 70/50RMB; and finally, Split Works has brought over Laura Jansen, and she’ll be playing Yugong Yishan next Tuesday at 8PM, 80/50RMB.
