Why: This week brings us the city’s own battle of the bands at Mao Livehouse, where there will be three rounds of competition before a final deciding battle. The decision to be made? What lucky Beijing bands will be heading to Summer Sonic music festival in Japan this year. This is the first time Chinese bands have made it to the epic Japanese music festival, and will be playing this year alongside powerhouses like The Strokes, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and X Japan. The battles started this week on Tuesday (check out the week’s lineups here), and on Friday night, the six winners from the week will battle it out on the Mao stage for the glory. Special guest Muma & Third Party is always a rocking show to see, so it should be an amazing show. Don’t miss it!
Runners up for this week are: Pangbianr.com’s Pairs Night, featuring some amazing duos including Shanghai’s own Pairs. This was a serious contender for gig of the week, but I really can’t resist a battle of the bands. Friday @ Old What? Bar, 9:30PM, 30RMB. On Saturday at D-22, there is some experimental & instrumental artists including a favorite of mine, Sparrow. Check them out, 10PM, 50/40RMB.
