Gig of the Week: 3 Mar 2010 — 9 Mar 2010

Why: This is the gig to be at this week. These are some heavy-hitting Chinese rock names, and they’re all about to head over to the United States for the infamous SXSW festival. If you’ve got the funds, get yourself to Yugong Yishan this Saturday. I’ve only seen Carsick Cars before, but AV Okubo were pegged by Michael Pettis, founder of D-22 and Maybe Mars records, as one of the top bands to watch out for this year. I’ve also really wanted to check out White, which is a really hard to Google outfit bringing together ex-Hang on the Box member Shenggy and Carsick Cars frontman Shou Wang. Snapline and PK14 are huge names in punk and have been around for years (well, four, but that’s decades in Beijing), and Xiao He is a folk artist to watch out for. Don’t miss it!
Runners up are: Rock Year’s 2010 gig at Mao Livehouse with some Jianghu mainstays and skapop group Toyhead, 60RMB @ 8.30PM Sat; When Punk Embraces Rock gig at D-22 for something on the punkier side of indie, 40RMB @ 9PM Sat.
